The almond tree is a culture typically Mediterranean whose origin is located in the mountainous regions of Central Asia (Iran, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and western Pakistan).
The traditional almond tree has a great ability to adaptation to very different conditions, being a very rustic species, so can withstand high temperatures in summer and very low temperatures in winter, in addition to prolonged periods of drought and cultivation in very poor soils.
The longevity of the almond tree varies depending on whether we are dealing with a plantation installed according to the traditional system or if, on the contrary, the plantation is installed in intensive system.
The almond plantation in Quinta da Raposa are undoubtedly the most adapted to the specific conditions for local climate, characterized by harsh winters with rain and wind during the months of January and February. The varieties planted are : Marinada, Guara, Lauranne and Ferragnes.
The issues related to preservation environment, maintenance of biodiversity, sustainability in the use of resources natural resources and social responsibility, driven by an increasing awareness/demand on the part of consumers, have been the great drivers of the growth of organic farming and integrated production.
In Portugal, the statistics available in the scope of the organic sector refer to only to production areas by type of culture and region and the number of producers, and according to 2014 data the area dedicated to nuts corresponds to 2% of the total area, corresponding to 4,567 acre.
The Agricultural part of the equation, world almond the main producing country is the United States, according to 2020 data, the United States of America occupied the first place in the world production of almonds in shell, followed by a great distance by Spain and Australia on the top 3 producing countries.
Portugal, represents less than 1% of the worlds production.
Almond production has been growing in a sustained way, which also corresponds to an increase in area.
In Europe, Spain dominates the production of this fruit at European level, with emphasis on the increase in production seen in Portugal since 2017 compared to previous years, there is a significant increase in both area and production, while at the same time there is an abrupt increase in average productivity, derived from the planting of intensive and super-intensive irrigated orchards in the Alentejo.
